“I am the Dot”

Sanctity (wilaya) is rulership, authority and chieftainship (imara, sulṭa, riyasa). It is the total exercising of control over creatures by God because it is the shadow of prophethood, and it is also love in its deepest sense. Its scope is vast and cannot be delimited. Wilaya, or sanctity, is the realization of the dot (nuqṭa), of the ba of the basmala that has been transmitted through Sayyiduna ʿAli, may God ennoble his face, who said “and I am the dot,” as if to say “I am sanctity” (al-wilaya). And this is the dot that is ascribed to the all-inclusive names and divine realities because it is through the basmala that God takes charge over the servant who has realized the station of servanthood and upon whom His names and attributes have become manifest in both his knowledge and his state.  So, he thus expresses the divine attribute of being during his annihilation in it while subsisting through the Real.
