God’s Light is Real — Not Metaphorical

When you strive against your lower self, the reality of this world becomes evident to you, you know that it is non-existent; that it has no existence except through God. Then God provides you with light, and through that light you come to know how close He is to you. When you behold this light, you are beholding it through the eye of your inner vision; you are beholding the Real. You are not beholding God, but you are beholding a representation of His attributes (mathal sifatih). As for God Himself, “Visions do not perceive Him” (la tudrikuhu al-absar) (Q Sura al-Anʿam 6 :103). And when you describe this light, you are describing the glass (zujaja) in which that light manifests. As for the light itself, it has no color and you have no ability to describe it.
