Ayat al-Nur, the Verse of Light

We call Āyāt al-Nūr, the Verse of Light, āyāt al-fatḥ, the verse of opening. This is because it brings together all the levels of witnessing, al-mushāhadah, and of opening, al-fatḥ, that is hallowed beyond the disclosures of forms and of shapes. The Real describes the completion and perfection of tawḥīd of the attributes, when He says “Allāhu nūr,” God is light, thus bringing together all the attributes under the attribute of light. He described Himself thus and He is the Light of all lights, and there is nothing except that it draws from His lights, for that light is its reality, and the cosmos is the site of disclosure of the descent of God. Thus He is truly the light alone, and without partner therein, for without lights it is impossible to have any perception.
